Maleah Davis' Mother Chased Out Of Ex-Fiance's Court Hearing By Protesters
The Texas mother of missing 4-year-old Maleah Davis was chased out of a courtroom on May 13 by protesters who accused her of not doing enough to protect her daughter.
Brittany Bowens attended the first scheduled court hearing for her ex-fiance, Derion Vence, who was charged with tampering with evidence, specifically a human corpse, in connection with Maleah’s disappearance.
Vence first told police Maleah was abducted; however, he was arrested after detectives found blood in his apartment and determined his story was inconsistent.
Shortly after Bowens arrived with her spokesperson, community activist Quanell X, the hearing was canceled and rescheduled for July 10.
Although Bowens did not speak after the canceled hearing, Quanell X spoke to reporters on her behalf, reported the Associated Press.
“The main thing right now that all of us want to know is what did he do with Maleah,” he told reporters outside the courtroom. “Where is Maleah?”
While Quanell X spoke, a group of protesters, including some family members of Maleah’s biological father, Craig Davis, yelled at Bowens.
“She let it happen,” one protester shouted before another called out, “Brittany knew all along.”
In August 2018, Child Protective Services removed Maleah and her brothers from the apartment Vence and Bowens shared after the girl suffered a head wound that resulted in multiple brain surgeries. The children were returned back to the home in February.
Quanell X previously alleged Vence was abusive to Maleah.
When asked by reporters why Bowens had left Maleah in Vence’s care while she attended her father’s funeral in Massachusetts, Quanell X declined to comment.
“I’m not going to speak to that.”
After Bowens and Quanell X stopped taking questions, they walked to the elevator, where they were chased by protesters yelling, “Justice for Maleah” and “murderer.”
Tamisha Mendoza, a cousin of Maleah’s father, said she questioned why Bowens stayed with Vence if she suspected he was hurting her daughter.
“You’re just as guilty as [Vence]. She needs to be locked up along with him,” Mendoza said.
"You said you had suspicions that he was molesting her, why did you stay?" Mendoza added. "Why didn't you remove yourself from the situation? Furthermore, why didn't you remove her, even if you didn't want to leave that situation? You could have sent her to her dad. You could have sent her to her grandparents. You could have sent her anywhere except for leaving her there."
Maleah’s father was not present at the hearing.
