Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck Open Up About 'PTSD' from Their Initial Romance
Jennifer Lopez opened up about the concerns from her team regarding her decision to document her romance with her husband Ben Affleck in her upcoming album and companion film, "This Is Me… Now."
In an exclusive interview with Variety, she shared, "As artists, we have to follow our heart, and this is me following my heart and doing something that maybe everybody didn’t think was the best idea, but I had to do it."
Scheduled for release on Feb. 16, "This Is Me… Now" commemorates the 20th anniversary of Lopez's album "This Is Me…Then." The accompanying short film, directed by Dave Meyers, will be released simultaneously by Amazon MGM Studios.
Despite reservations about having their relationship in the public eye considering the media scrutiny they endured during their initial relationship (“We both have PTSD,” Lopez acknowledged), Lopez said they’re now older and wiser.
“We also know what’s important, what’s really important in life, and it’s not so much what other people think. It’s about being true to who you are,” she said.
Addressing whether the film is a scripted feature or documentary, Lopez intriguingly stated, "You have to see it and you’ll have to experience it to understand it. That’s why I call it a ‘musical experience.’ Because there’s music, you can see it, you can hear it and then you’ll get to live it."
A recent teaser for the film included Lopez reflecting on her childhood aspirations: "When I was a little girl, when someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer was always… in love."
Almost a year ago, at the premiere of her rom-com "Shotgun Wedding," Lopez expressed her desire to act with Affleck again. The duo famously starred in 2003’s "Gigli," which faced criticism both from reviewers and the box office. "We talk, we love being together and working together, so, yeah, you never know,” Lopez stated.
Lopez and Affleck, known as "Bennifer," initially dated in the early 2000s, calling off their wedding in 2003. Their relationship was rekindled in 2021, leading to their marriage in Las Vegas in 2022. The couple appeared on the red carpet Dec. 5 in Hollywood, where she was honored at Elle’s Women in Hollywood celebration.
