Living in such an over-sexualized society, the thought of two love birds holding onto their goodies until their wedding night seems nearly impossible, right? Jumping the Broom seeks to challenge this notion. The highly anticipated film, produced by Tracey Edmonds and Bishop T.D. Jakes, tackles the somewhat taboo topic with lead characters Laz Alonso and Paula Patton. After a string of failed attempts at romance, Sabrina Watson (Patton) makes a promise to God that she’ll withhold from having sex until she meets the man of her dreams and gets married. Enter: Jason Taylor (Alonso).
Cast member Meagan Good, who plays Sabrina’s maid of honor, totally stands behind the intent of the project and told BET.com, “It’s a refreshing, spiritual film. I love the fact that they did wait [to have sex]. I think the film overall will encourage people to be less critical and judgmental, and remind people that when it comes to love and relationships, it’s okay to be with who you want to be with.” Though the idea of pre-marital abstinence could easily dominate the entire storyline, it doesn’t. The real struggle happens when Jason’s “downtown” family meets Sabrina’s siddity “uptown” family during their weekend wedding in Martha’s Vineyard.
Good is also pleased with the fact that the film doesn’t beat audiences over the head with a steel chastity belt, nor are the tones fiercely religious. Jumping the Broom finds a happy, and quite hilarious, medium. “It’s not done in an over-the-top, preachy way,” Good reassures audiences. “It’s done in an entertaining way where you’ll receive it. For me, that was one of the main reasons I did the movie, because I am a Christian and I love the Lord with all of my heart.”
Jumping the Broom hits theaters May 6.
