Hoverboards Get the Legal Smack Down
Hoverboards have been all the rage in 2015, but unfortunately it's looking like they may get you into more trouble than they're worth these days.
Besides the fact that some have been linked to electrical fires during charging, the popularity of the new gadget among adults and children has remained steady, especially during the holiday season. Still, new laws may shut down the fun, making it more difficult to use these boards in public.
As of 2016, California law states the following about "motorized boards" going more than 15 miles per hour: "The electronically motorized boards can only be ridden on a highway with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less, or specific designated bikeways.
"The rider must be at least 16 years old and must wear a bicycle helmet."
Further, "Cities and counties are authorized to restrict the use ..."
Basically, kids are out of luck with the toys (although realisitcally, if your board goes faster than 15 miles per hour, you have some next level device on your hands. Ha!).
Play safe and pay attention to the law; a fine isn't worth the trouble, but your safety is.
