Wendell Pierce And LaTanya Richardson Jackson To Be Honored By African American Film Critics Association
Wendell Pierce, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, John Douglass Thompson and Suzan-Lori Parks will all be honored by the African American Film Critics Association.
According to Variety, the inaugural Salute to Broadway event will take place on Monday (Oct. 17) at the Lambs Club in New York City.
“It’s no secret that some of our greatest actors have come from the stage or have tested their chops on it,” said Gil Robertson, AAFCA’s co-founder. “Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis are just a handful of our beloved icons for which this was true, with Tony winners Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Audra McDonald, Adrienne Warren, and Myles Frost among those continuing that legacy.”
Pierce, who is widely known for his roles in The Wire, Selma and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan will be honored with the Beacon Award. The 58-year-old is currently on Broadway as the lead character in Death of a Salesman.
Richardson Jackson, who is making her Broadway directorial debut with August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson, will receive the Vanguard Award. The Piano Lessons opening weekend kicks off on Thursday (Oct. 13) at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre and stars her husband and Tk-husband Samuel L. Jackson, CBS News notes.
Thompson, known for his role in The Letter Room and his upcoming role as Moses Wright in TILL will be honored with the Distinguished Achievement Award, while Parks’ Topdog/Underdog film starring Corey Hawkins and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will receive the Spotlight Award.
