Thousands of abolitionists broke into a Syracuse, New York, courtroom to free William "Jerry" Henry, a fugitive slave arrested under the Fugitive Slave Law, on Oct. 1, 1851. Henry’s supporters helped him escape to Canada by way of the Underground Railroad.
