High school seniors wishing to pursue hip hop studies at the University of Wisconsin are getting a major motivator to apply. Rapper MC Lyte is teaming up with the school's Office of Multicultural Arts Initiatives to award a $100,000 grant, named the First Wave MC Lyte Scholarship, to a student who wants to enroll in its hip-hop bachelor's program.
"For years I've dreamed of having the ability to help our community and now finally the day has arrived," says MC Lyte, who is also the founder of the Hip Hop Sisters Foundation. "HHSF is about changing lives and truly encouraging several generations that have been and are influenced by hip-hop culture. It is my life's mission to see those who believe, actually see their dreams come to fruition. Helping the younger generation see their strengths and potential is what my goals are for this foundation. This scholarship partnership with UW-Madison is just the beginning for what HHSF has in store."
Applicants will be judged based on academics, activism, and arts. The deadline to submit applications is October 1 and the recipient will be announced during the 2012 Soul Train Awards.
