Ryan Lochte Gets Slapped With Criminal Charges Over Gunpoint Robbery Story
Ryan Lochte had to see this coming.
After the American swimmer lied about the details of he and his teammates being robbed at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro during the Olympics on August 14, Rio police have charged Lochte with filing a false robbery report, according to Yahoo Sports.
The Associated Press is additionally reporting that Lochte would be informed of the charge in the United States, giving him the chance to decide whether he's going to form a defense in Brazil or not. The AP adds that the International Olympic Committee's ethics commission will also receive the indictment report.
According to TMZ Sports, Lochte could face up to six months in jail if convicted, although it's likely that he will work something out similar to a charity-paying gesture that his teammate James Feigen did.
That and filing a false robbery report isn't an extraditable offense, meaning that Lochte can't be forced to go to Brazil for it.
The charge comes days after a pair of Lochte's tearful apologies and losing four major endorsement deals due to his erroneous story of what happened that early morning in Brazil.
Initially, Lochte claimed that he and three of his USA Swimming teammates were pulled over in their taxi cab at gunpoint in a robbery and that a gun was put to his forehead.
Within days, Lochte's original account changed, as he backtracked and said that the swimmers were in a gas station and not pulled over in a cab and that a gun wasn't pointed at his forehead, but simply in his direction.
Despite tweaking the original details, Lochte never came out and said what Brazilian police claimed — that at least one of the swimmers vandalized the Rio gas station and urinated in it, causing armed security to demand that they pay for the damages.
Surveillance footage only backed Brazilian police's story, as the swimmers were seen exiting the Rio gas station.
Despite all the international embarrassment Lochte has caused himself and the U.S., he already has life after this scandal, as he has been tabbed to compete on Dancing With The Stars.
