Notorious Jewelry Thief ‘Diamond Doris’ Tells Atlanta News Station Her Story

Doris Payne, 91, is the focus of documentaries and books detailing her life.

Doris Payne, notoriously known as “Diamond Doris”, recently spoke with Atlanta news station WSB-TV about her decades-long stint as a jewelry thief stealing millions of dollars’ worth of bling from around the world.

The 91-year-old, who is the focus of documentaries and books detailing her life, says she’s never been caught in the act of lifting merchandise from a store.

“I have never been arrested in a jewelry store. I have never been arrested leaving a jewelry store,” Payne said.

Authorities say Doris used 22 aliases and has probably gotten away with more than she’s been caught with.

“Did you ever do time behind bars?” WSB-TV reporter Karyn Greer asked Payne.

“Nine days,” she replied.

Payne currently calls Atlanta home. Her latest arrest reportedly came in 2017 when she allegedly took merchandise from a Walmart in Chamblee.

“Walmart? No, I’ve never been to a Walmart and stole no jewelry,” Payne said when Greer asked her about the allegations.

A year earlier, she was arrested again for stealing a nearly $2,000 bracelet from the Von Maur store in Perimeter Mall. Payne says she needed to get caught in order to get publicity she needed to get to the next level.

“If I come to Atlanta, I might get a book deal,” she said. “I might get a movie deal because this is the only city in the United States that Blacks have any firm foot.”
