Exclusive: Tessa Thompson On The Racist Backlash She Received For Playing A White Superhero

Best response ever.

Every time a Black actor plays a traditionally white superhero, there is always some racist backlash. It happened when Michael B. Jordan played Johnny Storm, when Idris Elba played Heimdall and, of course, when Tessa Thompson was cast to play Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, which is in theaters November 3.

In our exclusive interview with the actress, we asked her to address the backlash and she had a great response. Basically, she isn't pressed: "If this sort of racist response illuminates an issue, a deeper issue — truthfully, I am actor, we are in the hotel room right now, I am fine. Do you know what I mean? But these same attitudes to people that look like me, that look like you, people die because of it in the street." She continued, "That is a deeper issue, an issue that has a lot of gravity that should be met with real seriousness."
Well said, Tessa. She isn't stressed over what internet trolls rant about. She is more focused on people whose lives are in danger everyday.
Check out the interview above and be sure to catch Thor: Ragnarok, which is in theaters November 3.
