Ruben Studdard, the 2003 American Idol winner, has filed for divorce from his wife of three years, Surata Zuri McCants.
According to TMZ, the baritone-voiced singer filed papers in Alabama blaming the break up on “irreconcilable differences.” A rep for Studdard told the celebrity news site that “Ruben and Zuri have gone their separate ways.”
The couple tied the knot in 2008 at a lavish ceremony in Studdard’s hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. Studdard met McCants in 2006 while signing copies of his third album, The Return, at a Wal-Mart in Atlanta.
Dubbed the "Velvet Teddy Bear” Studdard was a fan favorite on the second season of the popular talent contest. He edged out runner-up Clay Aiken to win the crown. Studdard’s biggest single to date since winning on Idol was the apologetic jam “Sorry 2004.”
