Shonda Rhimes Reacts to Haters Petitioning for Jesse Williams to Get Fired From 'Grey’s Anatomy'
Though some time has passed since Jesse Williams gave his pro-Black speech at the 2016 BET Awards, some folks are still bothered by his words, so much so that they want him fired from Grey's Anatomy. To their disappointment, though, Shonda Rhimes isn't on board with that.
A critic created a petition for the actor to be fired from the Shonda Rhimes-created ABC drama while another was also created to keep him on. Shonda took to Twitter to let everyone know that he wasn't going anywhere and they needed to deal.
The petition was created by a woman named Erin Smith on Change.org following his Humanitarian Award acceptance speech, where he touched on everything from the Black Lives Matter movement to cultural appropriation.
"If this was a white person making the same speech about an African American, they would have been fired and globally chastised, as they should be, but there has been no consequences to Williams' actions," she wrote in the petition description. "Why was Burke's character fired from Grey's Anatomy after his inappropriate homophobic slur, but nothing for Jesse Williams? Why the one-way street? Why the support for a hater? Why the hypocrisy? #AllLivesMatter."
The petition has received 5,186 signatures as of Tuesday, while the one that supports the actor has 5,647.
