March on Washington Plan

The National Action to Realize the Dream March on Aug. 24 will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

Plans for the National Action to Realize the Dream March, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington, have been announced.

On Aug. 24, led by Rev. Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King III, the march will commence in Lincoln Circle and proceed south on Daniel French Drive onto Independence Avenue. The march will end at the Martin Luther King Monument.

Kicking off the event at 8 a.m. is an hour of prayer, which will be followed by a lineup of speakers including: Nancy Pelosi, Bernice King, Steny Hoyer, Myrlie Evers-Williams, Attorney General Eric Holder, Martin Luther King III, Rev. Al Sharpton, Trayvon Martin’s family and Emmett Till’s family.

They are scheduled to leave Lincoln Circle and begin the march’s route at 12:30 p.m. Immediately after the march, Rev. Sharpton and Martin Luther King III will hold a debriefing at the Washington Monument.

At the end of the march, participants will then be routed to nearby Metro locations.

The celebration will continue through Aug. 28, 50 years to the day of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963 and Martin Luther King Jr.’s "I Have a Dream." President Obama is expected to speak at the Freedom Ring Rally at the Lincoln Memorial on Aug. 28.
