Rihanna, Kerry Washington And More React To The Passing Of Cicely Tyson
The legendary Cicely Tyson died at 96 years old Thursday evening (Jan. 28). The queen of stage, film and television had a career that spanned seven decades and was a huge influence on people of all backgrounds.
The Harlem native had worked with everyone from Oprah Winfrey and Viola Davis to James Earl Jones and Tyler Perry. Her most notable works are 1972’s Sounder, 1974’s The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, 1977’s Roots, 1989’s The Women of Brewster Place, 1994’s The Oldest Living Confederate Widow and several Tyler Perry films.
Just three days ago, on Jan. 26, she released her highly anticipated memoir Just As I Am.
"I want to be recalled as one who squared my shoulders in the service of Black women, as one who made us walk taller and envision greater for ourselves,” Tyson shared.
