Black Federal Employees Face Many Obstacles in Achieving Equality

An EEOC report finds that African-Americans face hurdles such as biases and lack of advancement opportunities.

A recent report by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) found that African-Americans working for the federal government are still facing many hurdles to achieve equality in the workforce.
Some of the reasons for these obstacles include bias, lack of proper training, mentoring or networking opportunities, and that federal agencies are neglecting to follow laws of diversity and inclusion. The report's findings were established after conducting dialogues with organizations of Black federal workers and women among others.

The Washington Post writes:

"The impediments, according to the report, 'were independently and repeatedly identified by our dialogue partners as the most formidable obstacles to equal employment opportunities for African-Americans in the federal sector.'

The obstacles include individual and unconscious bias and structural impediments, which together result in a form of racism Uncle Sam would like to think he is beyond. Of the seven obstacles identified by the consulting organizations, including Blacks in Government (BIG) and the African-American Federal Executives Association, it is the last one — which deals with enforcement issues — that is the most disturbing."
