Donald Trump Tweets Denial That Reporter 'Who Nobody Ever Heard Of' Received His 2005 Tax Returns in the Mail
On Tuesday evening at 9 p.m., Rachel Maddow broke a story regarding Donald Trump's leaked tax returns from 2005. After high amounts of anticipation, Maddow revealed that two pages of Trump's 1040 federal return were placed in the mailbox of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Cay Johnston.
During the segment, Johnston and Maddow revealed that, in 2005, Trump earned $253 million. After writing off $103 million as a loss, Trump paid $38 million in taxes on a reported income of $157 million.
Although the White House called the publication of the documents "illegal," they also released a statement that supported the numbers presented by Maddow and Johnston.
In discussing who sent the documents, Johnston speculated that Trump could have sent the returns himself in order to create a win for himself in the midst of other negative press for his administration.
However, President Trump tweeted about Johnston and called him a 'reporter who nobody ever heard of'
Then Johnston, who is not only extremely well-known among investigative journalists, but also received a Pulitzer Prize, an IRE Medal and the George Polk Award, responded to Trump
Johnston has appeared on additional media outlets explaining how the taxes Trump paid should not distract from the fact we have no idea from where the income came
According to Johnston, we should be concerned about any possible income Trump has or is receiving from Russian oligarchs visiting his various hotels. Johnston explained that the oligarchs are career criminals for the Russian government.
