Mike Epps Revitalizes His Childhood Community on New HGTV Show
Mike Epps is upgrading the neighborhood in which he grew up.
Last week, the teaser for the comedian’s brand-new show “Buying Back The Block” dropped on HGTV’s Instagram page, highlighting the community in which Epps was raised and what inspired him to invest in its restoration.
“I bought my whole childhood block back,” he said. “After all the big movies, television, running around doing stand-up all over the world, Indy was calling,” he explained.
“Indianapolis is home for me and there’s nothing in the world like it. Over the years, things have changed. Some of the houses are run down. The streets are run down. That’s why I’m buying back my block,” which includes “six homes we actually got evicted from.”
For “The Upshaws” actor, the pride he has for his beginnings is leading the charge.
“I grew up in the 70s,” he said. “It was about family and friends. It was about community. The memories were unforgettable.”
On the show, Epps will team up with his wife Kyra on a mission to renovate two homes over 12 weeks “and to make sure people can afford them.”
While Kyra is “very practical and realistic”, she noted that Mike “sometimes has this whimsical way of thinking so we kind of bring it together and it works.”
This is not the first time the couple, who tied the knot in June 2019, has utilized their creative chemistry. Their current home – located on the same street on which Mike was raised – was once a firehouse from the 1880s. Now, it’s called Big Blue, named after its blue exterior, following a total overhaul from top to bottom.
“When we bought it, it had no floors in it, had no wall, had nothing,” Epps said.
“Buying Back The Block” premieres Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. EST.
