Hip Hop Dominates on Spotify
Here’s some news that’s not surprising: hip hop tops the roster on Spotify as the most popular genre on the streaming app, a new study shows.
The figures came from Spotify’s playlist breakdown of the most listened to genres out of close to 20 billion tracks, in over 1,000 cities worldwide. In each of the areas, hip hop popped up on at least one playlist, regardless of the listener’s location or language, reports the Independent.
Regionally, fans are more apt to show loyalty to the home team (i.e. Meek Mill is currently dominating in Philadelphia, and British rapper Jamie XX's new album gets a lot of love in London).
Not that we needed a full global study to prove hip hop’s domination. In spite of paying artists notoriously low royalties, the numbers have been speaking for themselves. Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly was streamed more than 9 million times upon its March 2015 release, besting Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, for the highest single-day streaming feat in Spotify's history.
