BeBe Winans Releases ‘Black Lives Matter’ Tribute

The gospel legend wrote the song after the police killing of Freddie Gray in 2015.

This year’s Fourth of July festivities were punctuated by sweeping calls for an end to racial injustice that ensued after the recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and Elijah McClain.

  • In the midst of these protests, BeBe Winans dropped his latest single and music video with a simple yet powerful declaration: Black Lives Matter.

“It’s the right to live I’m after / Want to trade these tears for laughter / In one moment dreams are shattered / My son and daughter matters / Black Lives Matter,” the Grammy-winning singer powerfully sings over a soothingly smooth instrumental.

  • In a statement provided to Good Morning America, the gospel and R&B legend revealed that he first started working on the song in response to the 2015 police killing of Freddie Gray, a 25-year Black man who died while in the custody of police in Baltimore. Winans felt compelled to revisit the track in the wake of recent events.

“After witnessing the horrific tragedies of Freddie Gray, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and so many other countless lives being cut short, I started to think about the ways I could lend my voice to this movement,” Winans told GMA. “Music has always been a way to bring positivity, hope, and people together, so I wanted to create a song that could help bring a sense of peace to this world for our children, including my own. Black. Lives. Matter.”

  • All proceeds from “Black Lives Matter” song will be donated to the Black Lives Matter organization and Bryan Stevenson's Equal Justice Initiative, according to Good Morning America.
