Meek Mill Pays Bail For 20 Women So They Can Spend Holidays At Home, With Family
Meek Mill was apparently in the holiday spirit when he paid bail for 20 incarcerated women so they can spend the holidays at home.
According to the REFORM Alliance, an organization the Philadelphia rapper launched with Jay-Z in 2019, the women were incarcerated at Riverside Correctional Facility in Meek’s hometown and unable to afford bail.
On Saturday (Dec. 24), five of the women were released, and 15 more will be released in the coming week, according to the nonprofit. All of the women will receive a gift card in order to buy “groceries or gifts for the holidays.”
Meek says his own experience in the criminal justice system made the release of these women very personal for him.
“It was devastating for me to be away from my son during the holidays when I was incarcerated, so I understand what these women and their families are going through,” he was quoted in a REFORM Alliance Instagram post.
“For families impacted by the criminal justice system, the holidays can be an extremely challenging time. No one should have to spend the holidays in jail simply because they can’t afford bail, and no child should be without their parents during this time if we can do something about it. I’m grateful for the opportunity to help these women be with their families and loved ones during this special time of year.”
According to the REFORM Alliance’s website, the nonprofit “aims to transform probation and parole by changing laws, systems and culture to create real pathways to work and wellbeing.”
Meek Mill has long been an advocate for criminal justice reforms. The social media movement #FreeMeekMill started in 2017, after the rapper was sentenced to two to four years in prison for a parole violation. He was freed after five months.
