Josh Smith Chooses to Play for Clippers
The Los Angeles Clippers had a commanding 3-1 lead over the Houston Rockets in the Western Conference semifinals, but blew it and lost the series.
Veteran small forward Josh Smith was a factor on that Rockets team, but when faced with the free-agent decision on who to sign with, Smith went with the Clippers.
He "chose winning and a defined role over money," as the reasons why, according to ESPN. Smith's one-year deal for the veterans minimum is worth $1.5 million.
After being waived by the Detroit Pistons in December, Smith, 29, played 55 games for the Rockets and averaged 12.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists to end the 2014-15 season.
For the Clippers, this has been a busy off-season. The team traded for Lance Stephenson and signed Paul Pierce, DeAndre Jordan and now Smith in free-agent deals.
"Over my pro career I have spent a lot of time in Houston with friends and family. Over the past year, while with the Rockets, the team, fans and people of Houston have made it a second home," Smith said in a statement, as reported by ESPN. "I want to express my appreciation to everyone for the support and kindness they have showed me and my family while I have been here. Thank you!"
