Vogue Editor Anna Wintour Praises Michelle Obama When Asked About Melania Trump
In today’s shade without names news, Anna Wintour decided she’d answer an interviewer’s questions about Melania Trump but only discussing Michelle Obama.
The editor-in-chief of Vogue appeared on The Economist Asks podcast on Sunday (July 21) and skillfully avoided answering a question that, if answered in a certain way, could praise Melania Trump’s fashion sense.
Wintour was asked about the current first lady’s wardrobe choices during her recent trip to the United Kingdom and decided to prop up her favorite first lady instead.
“Well, I think First Lady Michelle Obama really was so incredible in every decision she made about fashion,” Wintour told podcast host Anne McElvoy. “She supported young American designers. She supported designers, indeed, from all over the world. She was the best ambassador this country could possibly have in many ways, obviously, way beyond fashion.”
This took McElvoy back a bit, causing her to reiterate her original question: “But she’s not the First Lady now. So what about the one you’ve got now?”
Wintour’s response? “To me, [Obama] is the example that I admire."
This exchange certainly didn’t get by social media who championed Anna Wintour for her immense deployment of shade without put downs or even mentioning Melania Trump’s name.
Well played!
