Bhad Bhabie Draws Backlash After She Compares Her ‘Hood’ Upbringing To Tarzan

The ‘Cash Me Outside’ girl compared ‘growing up in the hood’ was like being raised in a jungle

Danielle Bregoli, who originally became famously known by her Dr. Phil appearance as the “Cash Me Outside” girl, is facing more backlash online over some eye-brow raising commentary she made during a recent Instagram Live.

  • Earlier this month, Bregoli was hit with cultural appropriation accusations after she posted videos to her Instagram page in which her skin was noticeably darkened.

Initially, the 17-year-old waved off the criticism and hit back that  people “need to chill and focus on what’s important right now” in reference to the coronavirus crisis. Now, the “Gucci Flip Flops” rapper took to Instagram Live to defend her decision to darken her skin and shot down accusations that she was trying to be Black.

  • But she only made matters worse after she used Disney’s fictional character Tarzan as an explanation to explain why her mannerisms are a result of her upbringing.

“Maybe the reason for that is because I grew up in the hood,” she stated. “Tarzan...he grew up around the bears in the jungle. He didn't know no better [sic]…Tarzan was with the monkeys. He grew up with that. That's all he knows! When someone grows up in a certain area or a certain place, they're a part of their environment. They only know what’s been around them.”

She continued, “I can’t help it if I act a little hood or act [like] what y’all would say is more Black. I’m sorry. That’s the type of people I grew up around. I may do some little things that may make you think I’m trying to be Black. But, I’m not. I’m not trying to be Black.”

  • Bregoli’s comments certainly did not blow over well online regardless of her intentions. “Bhad Bhabie did not just compare herself growing up in the hood to tarzan growing up in a jungle surrounded by gorillas,” one person said on Twitter.

“Can we stop giving Bhad Bhabie attention? She literally compared Black folks to gorillas in Tarzan. We gotta stop hate watching/hate supporting people,” a second chimed in.
