Here's Why Nicki Minaj Demanded To Be Removed From This Singer's New Album
Today is the 64th day of 2018, and there’s still no Nicki Minaj to be found.
That includes on R&B crooning Torontian Tory Lanez's new Memories Don't Die album, which he said originally featured a verse from the Young Money raptress, but was scrubbed from the project after a text message conversation gone wrong.
Tory dropped the sophomore studio project last Friday (March 2) with a handful of assists from hip-hop favorites like 50 Cent, Wiz Khalifa, Fabolous and Future. One feature was missing however: Nicki’s verse on his politically-charged “Shooters” record. According to the “Luv” singer, she was originally on the song, but decided to snatch her verse away after a text message that was taken entirely the wrong way. Tory said that he’s a “super fan” of Nicki’s, so by no means did he mean to offend her, but that’s unfortunately how the situation turned out.
“I was texting her, so it may have come off in a different way,” he explained. “She probably read it differently than I said it.”
Tory added that this isn’t the first time he’s gotten into an SMS mix up because of how certain conversations and tones can be so easily misconstrued when handled via text.
“Maybe it kind of came off a little bit—I don’t know—arrogant,” he continued. “I kind of said something that I shouldn’t have said about her verse. She was just like, ‘Well, n**ga it’s just not that serious. Take my verse off the thing.’”
Despite the misunderstanding, Tory reiterated that there’s no love lost for Nicki and he’s still a major supporter of hers. He’s not, however, “a reacher,” he said, so he obliged to her wishes. He’d also still like to work with her in the future should the opportunity present itself again, and if she ever needs him, he’s just a phone call away.
“I will always work with Nicki,” he concluded. “I love everything about Nicki. Even to this day, no matter if n**gas, or the fans, or people try to switch up—I’ll never take away what she’s done for the female culture in hip-hop. Ever.”
