Japan Fashion Week Canceled

The fashion community is shifting gears to help relief efforts.\r \r \r

Organizers have canceled Japan Fashion Week in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that happened last week. Instead of gearing up to show fall/winter 2011 collections in Tokyo, designers and fashion fans are helping in other big ways.

Clothing brand Uniqlo is reportedly donating approximately $25.6 million in cash and clothes to the Japanese Red Cross Society, with almost half the money coming directly from CEO Tadashi Yanai’s pocket. Pop-singer Lady Gaga created a relief bracelet, available on her website for $5, emblazoned with the words “We Pray for Japan,” with all proceeds going to those impacted.

The 12th annual Japan Fashion Week was scheduled to run March 21 to 25. In addition to shutting down the event, the recent disasters are also crippling retail businesses, with employees choosing to stay home or being asked to, and less people out shopping.
