Grace Colbert's Family Responds to Cheerios Commercial Backlash
Since everyone on the Internet had something to say about the biracial family in a recent Cheerios ad, it was probably about time that the family of the commercial’s star responded.
The 30-second Cheerios commercial featured a biracial couple whose daughter was played by 6-year-old Grace Colbert. Colbert’s father says the ad struck up the long overdue conversation regarding the changing face of America.
Christopher Colbert, the father of Grace Colbert, was not offended by the cutting remarks which bombarded the YouTube clip of the ad.
Colbert, along with his wife and daughter, spoke to MSNBC TV:
“Being part of a biracial family, it’s just the reality,” Colbert said. “We’re also part of the face of America.”
Colbert added that he was “excited” about the reactions to the commercial, both good and bad, in that they brought much-needed attention to the growing number of biracial couples in America.
According to Census data, interracial marriages are at an all-time high, and more than 9 million Americans self-identify as multiracial.
The Colberts, along with the growing multitude of diverse families in America, practice the simple philosophy of who a person chooses to love “shouldn’t be an issue anymore,” said Colbert.
As far as Grace goes, she took it all in stride like a 6-year-old should: She thought everyone was admiring her "great smile."
