Bishop O.C. Allen and Rashad Burgess Renew Vows 20 Years After Marriage

The couple shares two children.

After two decades of wedded bliss, Bishop Oliver Clyde Allen III and Rashad Burgess celebrated their milestone anniversary by renewing their vows.

In front of 600 guests and their two children, Joshua, 11, and Caylee, 10, they exchanged "I dos" on Sunday (July 16) at The Whitley in Atlanta, as reported by PEOPLE. Friend of the duo Judge Glenda Hatchett — also known for her role on Judge Hatchett – officiated the ceremony.

But 20 years ago, before same-sex marriage was legal, the happy couple married in a “private sunrise ceremony” by the ocean.

Now, Allen is overjoyed for the advancements that have been made since then. He told the outlet of the significance of this moment in time, "It meant the world for us to finally bring all our family and friends together after 20 years of marriage to celebrate love." He added, "In a world with so much division, we seek to be the bridge that brings people together through the power of love.

Allen serves as Senior Pastor and founder of Vision Cathedral of Atlanta and CEO of iElevate+TV, while Burgess is Vice-President for Advancing Health and Black Equity Gilead Sciences Inc.

Three years after they married, the couple launched their church as a safe space for Black members of the LGBTQ+ community. In February, Allen told  Today, “When people of color, Black people couldn’t find solace in white LGBTQ spaces, we created our own," Allen told Today.com about the church's mission. "We created our own of everything, whether it was our own fraternities and sororities, our own institutions, our own churches.”

For the couple, though, Allen told PEOPLE that the key to their long-lasting love had been a willingness to support their achievements. He said, "We never got in the way of each other's success because we always believe that we can be better versions of ourselves because we are in each other's lives."
