Welcome to BET.com's 12 Days of Pride series where, with the help of seasoned drag queen and RuPaul's Drag Race alum Shangela Laquifa Wadley, we break down 12 standout reasons why LGBT Pride is to be celebrated, especially within the Black community.

In the sixth installment of the series, we celebrate members of the transgender community.

Throughout history, these men and women have continued to serve as pillars of the wider LGBT community with historic figures making their marks like Carlett A. Brown, who was the first transgender person to cover Jet Magazine back in 1953.

As time progressed, the trans community continued to become more publicized with Marsha P. Johnson playing a major role in the liberation of LGBT folks during the Stonewall riots, in New York's Greenwich Village. In more contemporary times, more trans people of color like Janet Mock, Laverne Cox and Tiq Milan have become major faces of progression for the LGBT community.

We tip our hats to those transgender men and women who continue to push for inclusivity and change.
