In the wake of the cheating scandal in Atlanta city schools, a Texas school district superintendent that helped run one of the school districts in Georgia has been placed on indefinite paid leave effective today.

Dr. Kathy Augustine’s former school district in Atlanta—where she served as deputy superintendent—is currently under investigation for allegations of cheating on standardized tests.

Augustine was being paid $188,000 a year to head the DeSoto Independent School District, which has around 9,000 students. On Monday, however, she announced that she would take a leave of absence based on a mutual agreement with the school board. She had been on the job since May.

“I’ve worked with many of the employees identified. I’ve looked into their eyes; I’ve shaken their hands; and, yes, I believed in them. And now, I read they violated a professional trust,” Augustine read from a statement on Monday regarding the investigation in Atlanta.

She said that she was “shocked” and saddened by the news. She also stated that during her 12 years with the Atlanta School District she “did not have any knowledge of widespread cheating” on the state’s standardized tests.

Nearly 180 educators in the Atlanta district were accused of cheating on Georgia’s Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) last week. A report stated that teachers felt pressured to meet state “targets” of achievement.
