Whoopi Goldberg Lays Into DeRay McKesson and He Claps Right Back

"The View" co-host had time.

Black Lives Matter activist DeRay McKesson recently got a bit ahead of himself when he suggested in two now-deleted tweets that the filmmakers behind War of the Planet of the Apes dressed one of the apes in a blue jacket in an attempt to emulate his image.

The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg, while discussing the activist's claims during the "Hot Topics" segment of the morning talk show, took the time to school him on where the origins of that image came from and urged him to have a slice of humble pie in the process.

The misunderstanding all started with the two tweets that McKesson has since removed from his account.

"Given the history of rendering Black people as apes, I'm offended & appalled by the lack of consciousness in Hollywood," he wrote. "In associating Black people with apes, active work is being done to perpetuate the dehumanization of Black people in mass media."

Here is where Whoopi comes in.

The talk show host didn't hold back while detailing where the true origins of that image came from.

"DeRay, you need to go back and watch the 1968 original and check out what the apes were wearing," she said, referencing the initial film Planet of the Apes, which showed the apes wearing very similar blue jackets. "This has nothing to do with you. This was a movie about what happens when mankind doesn't pay attention to environment, to how we treat animals and each other... Get over yourself!"

The battle didn't end there, though.

DeRay made sure he had the last word by returning to Twitter to address the backlash he received from the Oscar winner. He explained that he ultimately deleted the tweets after speaking with more folks about the film's history and realizing he was wrong.

He ended things by telling Goldberg that he's "here" if she has "something to say."
