Solange Knowles Talks About Her Mommy Style and Mixing Prints
Last week, Solange Knowles served as DJ at the re-opening of Ferragamo's Fifth Avenue shop wearing a purple blazer with bright red pants, a printed blouse and pink stripy sandals. So, of course, somebody had to sit the girl down and ask her how we can mix and match prints without looking like a disaster.
"I think the fabrics have a lot to do with it," she told Styleist.com. "A lot of times, if I’m matching or clashing prints, I make sure they’re the same fabric. I’ll do silks OR cottons. It’s very rare that I’ll do silk prints with a cotton shirt. It kind of sculpturally puts it in the same uniform. It’s instinctual."
The stylish mom even said that her 7-year-old son, Daniel, has picked up a few tricks of the trade himself.
"I buy him pieces, but he always puts them together. He likes it," she said. "He went through this really weird phase where he would only wear flannels and he would pop one collar in intentionally. Every day. He’s worn his clothes inside out, and when I tried to tell him, his response to me was, 'Everyone lets you do your style; no one tells you how to do your style.' What can you say to that? You gotta let him run with it."
Wonder what Daniel says about his mom's outfits when she takes him to school as she admitted that it takes a little while for her to get fashionable in the mornings, often leaving in whatever she can grab. Then she'll head back home and put more effort into the day's ensemble.
"My morning style, if you could write a fart sound, that's exactly what I look like," she said. "Oh my God, I'm telling you, I look like crap. It might be because there's a lot of stuff going on that it looks like there's a sense of style. My getting dressed doesn't happen until well after I've dropped him off at school. I wake up and grab Union Jack leggings, Adidas sneakers and a sweatshirt. Then, when I get home, I get dressed for the day. I'm not a morning person."
