Tragedy: Teenage Girl Dies After Shootout at Candlelight Vigil in Oakland
Another life lost to senseless gun violence.
A teenage girl has died, and three others youths have been injured after a shooting Tuesday night in downtown Oakland, California. The 16-year-old girl, who was in critical condition when emergency responders arrived, later died at the hospital. The three injured victims are in stable condition.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the victims were attending a candlelight vigil several blocks away for someone who drowned in Salinas, California. It is not yet clear whether or not the shooting was related to the vigil or if it was a random act of violence.
The local police department tweeted about the violence, using a hashtag as a plea for citizens in the area to stop gun violence.
One witness, Mason Stone, told the Chronicle that he heard multiple gunshots in rapid succession at 5:41 p.m., "And then basically there were people running every which way," he said.
So far no suspects or arrests have been reported. Hopefully police are able to bring the perpetrators to justice soon.
