“In The Heights” Has a Setback on the Way to Silver Screen
It’s back to the drawing board for those who are trying to get the movie version of In the Heights made.
Deadline is reporting that Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of the four-time Tony award–winning musical, had plans to bring his story of "a bodega owner who inherits his grandmother’s lottery earnings" to the big screen via Universal Pictures. High School Musical director Kenny Ortega was on board to direct, and it was said that big Latino names would play small roles in its big screen incarnation.
But word is the deal fell apart because the studio balked at the film’s $37 million price tag. Part of the reason for the hefty budget is that In the Heights would have to be filmed in New York City in the summer—a very pricey time of year to shoot a movie in the Big Apple.
Despite this setback, you still may still see In the Heights at a theater near you (relatively) soon. Miranda hopes to make the movie in the immediate future with another studio. He said in a statement, "[Universal and I] weren't able to make the film version of In the Heights together, but ... moving forward, I'm excited to explore other options to make the movie a reality."
