Report: Texans Arian Foster to Have Groin Surgery on Friday

Star running back could miss half of the 2015 season.

Damaging blow to the Houston Texans' 2015 season.

ESPN is reporting that Texans star running back Arian Foster will undergo groin surgery in Philadelphia on Friday, forcing him to miss as much as half the season.

According to ESPN, Foster suffered the groin injury on Monday night and the surgery will likely make him miss the start of the Texans' regular season, beginning at home against the Kansas City Chiefs on September 13. If placed on the team's short-term injured reserved list, Foster would be allowed to rejoin the team during practices after Week 6 and to play in a game after Week 8.

The news is a huge blow to the Texans, which finished 9-7 in the AFC South division and were in the hunt for a wild-card playoff berth. Foster rushed for 1,246 yards and eight touchdowns in 13 games last season after only playing eight games in 2013 due to injuries. His 1,246 rushing yards were the sixth most in the NFL last year.

Second-year running back Alfred Blue will likely start in the absence of Foster, but the Texans failed to add depth to their backfield Wednesday, when they couldn't come to terms with free-agent rusher Pierre Thomas, as detailed by the veteran's agent on Twitter.

Blue rushed for 528 yards and two touchdowns on 169 carries last season.

The Texans begin their pre-season by hosting the San Francisco 49ers next Saturday, August 15.
