Bow Wow, Meagan Good and Jordin Sparks on Mother's Day
Still deciding what to give your mom for Mother’s Day this year? You may not have to spend a lot, judging by the responses these celebrities gave BET.com about the best gifts they ever received from their kids and the presents their mothers appreciated most.
While a couple splurged on jewelry, like Shad “Bow Wow” Moss (who once gave his mama a Rolex watch), or sprung for trips like Meagan Good (who planned to take her mother to Las Vegas to see the Sugar Shane Mosley-Manny Pacquiao fight), most celebs raved about the joys of homemade surprises.
“My kids baked brownies for me. It’s so sweet to wake up to that,” said Liya Kebede (actress in Desert Flower).
“My favorites were the little boxes that my kids made in pre-school with their picture and name or handprints,” Hawthorne’s Vanessa Bell Calloway remembered.
For Garcelle Beauvais of the upcoming series Franklin & Bash, it’s “a handwritten note or card, or something made at school. My mom loved gifts like trips and jewelry and spa treatments, but I like the things that mean you took the time.”
Gugu Mbatha Raw’s mother felt the same way. “I think she always appreciated the things I made for her. I drew her pictures and wrote her stories and poems, those personal things she always saved.”
Singer Jordin Sparks also got creative. “When I was about 14, I’d already spent my allowance, so I didn’t have money, and I found this piece of wood and I carved into it, ‘Mom, you’re my foundation.’ She still has it in her bathroom.”
Private Practice star Audra McDonald still has the lilac tree her daughter gave her five years ago—trees last much longer than flowers!
But for The Talk’s Holly Robinson Peete, the mother of four, the best gift of all is a morning in bed: “When they let me sleep, I’m very happy!”
