HIV-Positive Track Coach Arrested on Charges of Molesting Male Students and Producing Child Porn
A former instructional assistant and track coach was arrested and charged Friday on several counts of assault and child pornography after it was alleged that he molested several male students, according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office in Maryland.
According to WUSA 9, Carlos Bell told investigators he was HIV positive, a statement corroborated by physical evidence.
Bell, 30, faces three charges of producing child pornography and two counts of assault. As the investigation continues, officials expect more charges to mount.
According to investigators, Bell sexually abused at least seven males on school property, his home and possibly at other locations.
Bell, who was an instructional assistant at Benjamin Stoddert Middle School and also the head indoor track coach at La Plata High School, was immediately removed from the school and barred from coaching.
The investigation began in December after a parent from one of the high school students reported strange “electronic messages” Bell was sending her child.
Detectives then searched Bell’s work computer but did not find anything suspicious. When the investigation moved to his home computer, authorities were troubled to find data linking him to the production of child pornography.
Charles County Sheriff Troy D. Berry said at a news conference that “some of the evidence includes graphic images of Bell sexually assaulting victims.”
Investigators said they have identified four of Bell’s alleged victims. Two of the victims have been tested and neither tested positive for HIV. They are expecting the other two to be tested and are trying to notify the other three.
Charles County Public Schools said Bell hasn’t worked in any school building since Dec. 22, 2016.
“Student safety is job one, and clearly we have work to do to determine where we fell short in this instance, and how we can ensure that this will never happen again,” said CCPS superintendent Kimberly Hill in an emailed statement to WUSA 9. “Our immediate attention will be focused on providing support to any students that may have been affected by Mr. Bell’s actions.”
Bell is currently being held at the Charles County Detention Center with no bond.
