2021 Soul Train Awards: 5 Reason Why We Love Our “Certified Soul” Award Nominee Charlie Wilson

This will be a star-studded event slated to be attended by Babyface who got his star in October 2013, along with Snoop Dogg, who got his star five years later, in November 2018.

For the fans who are unable to attend, don't worry! You can exclusively stream the ceremony live via walkoffame.com.

Uncle Charlie's career began as the lead vocalist of the GAP Band alongside his late brothers Ronnie Wilson and Robert Wilson. Following the group's success with hit singles “Outstanding,” “Yearning for Your Love,” “Burn Rubber on Me,” and “Early in the Morning," the group would be rumored to be social activists with their song "You Dropped A Bomb On Me" in 1982.  People believed the tune was in response to the horrific events in his hometown of Oklahoma during the Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921, when Black residents were targeted and killed by a racist mob of white men.

When the hitmaker sat down with ABC News in 2021, he assured fans that the only "bomb" the song refers to is one made of love. Still, he is proud of the attention the song has continued to garner.

"It's bringing attention back to the race riots. I'm so happy about that," he said.

In 1999, the group released their final album "Y2K: Funkin' Till 2000 Comz" then the trio disbanded in 2010 after Robert suffered a fatal heart attack.

Still, Charlie Wilson had more music in his heart and would quickly reinvent himself as a solo artist.

Throughout his solo journey, he has amassed 13 number-one singles, 13 Grammy nominations, a New York Times and Washington Post best-selling memoir, “I Am Charlie Wilson,” a BET Lifetime Achievement Award, a Soul Train Icon Award, a Soul Train Certified Soul Award, and a NAACP Music Makes a Difference Award.

The "My Love Is All I Have" performer has effortlessly made the crossover between rap and hip hop by co-signing with Nas, Tyler The Creator, Pharrell, and Snoop Dogg.

While his career has hit many high points, Charlie's life has also been marked with despair.

During the height of his career in its formative years, the singer developed an addiction to crack and cocaine and found himself homeless. In 2020, he discussed his journey to health and wholeness while attending rehab, where he would meet his now-wife, Mahin. The couple has been married for over 20 years.

In 2008, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which disproportionately affects Black men, as cited by The American Cancer Society. Thankfully, due to early detection and treatment, Charlie has been cancer-free for 16 years.

Since his diagnosis, Charlie has used his voice to encourage other Black men to undergo early testing.

A huge congratulations to Charlie Wilson on his accomplishments! If we ask him how he's doing, we're sure he'll say, "I'm Blessed!"
