In one of the more head scratching stories of the weekend, a cartoon portraying a woman’s body transformation got a lot of people’s attention.

The cartoon, which went viral after someone tweeted it, shows a well-endowed, tan blonde woman in high heels and more revealing clothing walking up to a book, picking it up, reading it and then walking away after finishing it while during that time turning into a pale, more European-looking brunette.

Many people found the viral cartoon offensive because it stereotyped women both for what they wear, but also, made an assumption of what kinds of women actually read. However, if you’re looking for an explanation of why someone would create a depiction like this, you’d then have to try to understand an erotic niche called “bimbo transformation.”

The artist, known as Sortimid on DeviantArt, supposedly commissioned the drawing privately and didn’t mean for it to get out to the public. They say the fetish takes many forms and usually involves “hyper-feminine, hyper-sexualized caricature.”

If you take a few steps further, you find that some of Sortimid’s art even depicts men turning into women after drinking beer and some that aren’t particularly question provoking. The artist did later address the controversial viral cartoon and suggested people understand its context.

“Just wanted to say I’m sorry for all the flak you’ve gotten over this misunderstood picture!” Sortimid captioned via the piece’s DeviantArt page. “Hopefully people will either take the time to enlighten themselves and find context, or move on. Either way, good luck <3.”

To some however this wasn’t satisfactory. And for good reason.

“According to this picture, reading weakens muscle tone, and in addition to that it makes you look white and almost European and makes you cut your hair too,” a Facebook user wrote of the cartoon. “Just ignore that picture, one can read and remain black and dress as one wish.”
