Kandi Burruss has been a newlywed with Todd Tucker for two months now, but the Real Housewives of Atlanta star says they're still adjusting to marriage because now the couple is spending less time together. Tucker's gig in Los Angeles to produce TV One's new series Hollywood Divas has them spending time mostly on the weekends - if that. Still, the pair are finding ways to make their long-distance marriage work and in her recent interview with Ebony, Burruss stressed that communication is important to a strong relationship.
"We make it work through a lot of communication, and we try to see each other as often as possible," Burruss said. "There was a time when we both got really busy and went a while without seeing each other. I actually was getting really upset, almost crying. I called him fussing one day and, as I was fussing, he came through the door and surprised me. To me, you have to do things like that and make your relationship a priority. Our new rule is to not let two weeks go by without spending time together. That's the limit."
When it comes to communication, Burruss said that her husband has helped her improve on her talking skills.
"He enjoys talking often. In fact, I need to step my call game up throughout the day. And if we have disagreements, I'm less inclined to want to talk about it. He wants to talk everything out. That's helped me get better with my communication."
She also shared some advice for engaged couples, pulling from her own experience to say that the opinions of those outside of the relationship shouldn't trump the decisions made by you and your partner.
"Of course, everyone also says to not let anyone in your business. Obviously, that was a big issue with my mom, and I'm working on that. I had to be like, 'Hey, this is what we're doing and this is how we're rolling,'" she added.
