The parents of Trayvon Martin have written a letter of support to the parents of Martin Richard, an 8-year-old killed in the Boston Marathon bombings on Monday afternoon. Richard was the youngest of three fatalities in the tragedy.

A friend of Martin Richard’s teacher posted a photo on Facebook of him holding a sign reading, “No more hurting people. Peace,” that he had made in class. News reports said that Martin made the sign after a lesson about the killing of Trayvon by George Zimmerman. 

Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, Trayvon's parents, mentioned the lesson in the letter they released through the Trayvon Martin Foundation. 

The note reads:

Statement to the Family of Martin Richard from the Parents of Trayvon Martin

Our hearts are broken over the tragedy in Boston yesterday. Our family sends our sincerest condolences to all of those who have been affected by this terrible situation. We especially would like to send a message to the family of eight-year-old Martin Richard. We have come to understand that the peace sign that Martin is holding in a photo being circulated throughout the media was created in response to a lesson by his teacher about the death of our son. From our family to yours, we are praying for you, thinking about you and will remember your son for the rest of our lives.

Martin Richard came to the Boston Marathon to cheer on his father who was running in the race. The boy's mother faced severe injuries to her brain and underwent surgery and his sister lost a leg.

Lu Lingzi, a Boston University student, and Krystle Campbell, a 29-year-old restaurant manager, were identified as the two other deaths in the explosions.

President Obama traveled to Boston Thursday to participate in an interfaith service honoring the more than 170 people wounded in the Boston Marathon bombings.
