Lil Wayne Publicly Addressed His Devastating Suicide Attempt At The Hip Hop Awards

"He saw blood everywhere. A bunch of police hopped over me..."

New Orleans’ crowned best rapper alive, hip-hop legend and man of the 2018 Hip-Hop Awards night Lil Wayne took the stage to accept his I Am Hip-Hop Award.

And, boy, did he have a story for us.

Publicly speaking light to a darker moment for him, his suicide attempt at the age of 12, Weezy took his hat off not only to his fans, family and steadfast supporters, but to a man by the name of Uncle Bob. “He came into an apartment one day, he bust in the door,” Weezy said of Uncle Bob, who has a then-homicide detective, when he found a young Dwayne Carter in his near-death state. “Guns drawn—he saw nobody. He saw legs on the floor. It was my legs. He saw blood everywhere. A bunch of police hopped over me. He refused to do so.”

Weezy said that EMS was there, which he never knew, but told Uncle Bob that they could not resuscitate Wayne. That’s when he took matters into his own hands and rushed a 12-year-old Wayne to the hospital on his own accord, refusing to leave until he was certain that Wayne’s life would be saved. “He was off on detail,” Wayne said of Uncle Bob’s nobility. “He just heard the call and came.”

To this day, Wayne revealed, Uncle Bob now has two amputated legs, but refuses to accept even a meal from the NOLA rap icon. But as he held his glimmering award in his hand, he bowed to Uncle Bob for inspiring a refusal Wayne has held onto his entire hip-hop tenure: giving up.

See his recollection of the event, with his daughter Reginae Carter and mother Ms. Jacida Carter at his side, and fans’ reactions to the touching moment below.
