Poll: Should Alicia Keys Perform in Israel?
To protest an upcoming Alicia Keys concert in Tel Aviv, a delegation of Palestinian-Americans recently delivered a petition with 12,000 signatures to the New York City office of Keys' Keep a Child Alive non-profit organization.
"We ask Alicia Keys to stand on the side of justice," read the Change.org petition. "Until Israel ends its occupation and oppression of the people of Palestine we ask you, as a person of conscience and a philanthropist, not to play in Israel."
Author Alice Walker and several other entertainers and activists have also called on the singer to cancel her July 4 performance.
“It would grieve me to know you are putting yourself in danger (soul danger) by performing in an apartheid country that is being boycotted by many global conscious artists," wrote Walker in an open letter to Keys.
Keys released a statement to The New York Times last month, confirming her plans to move forward with the show: “I look forward to my first visit to Israel. Music is a universal language that is meant to unify audiences in peace and love, and that is the spirit of our show.”
