BET Awards ‘20: 8 Times Women Owned Black Music’s Biggest Night
The BET Awards has always shown love and appreciation to the celebrated and emerging female artists that are impacting and moving the culture forward. The 20th BET Awards will be premiere virtually because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic on June 28, and ahead of this year’s annual celebration of Black music, here are eight times that female artists have swept up the accolades.
2019: Cardi B Won Album Of The Year For ‘Invasion Of Privacy’
The rising rap star was up against some stiff competition. The other albums up for nomination were Travis Scott’s Astroworld, Meek Mill’s Championships, Ella Mai’s self-titled debut album, and The Carter’s Love Is Everything.
2018: Fresh Off The Critical Success Of Debut Studio Album, ‘CTRL,’ SZA Won Best New Artist
The first lady of Top Dawg Entertainment beat out burgeoning music stars H.E.R., Daniel Caesar, GoldLink and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie for the accolade.
2017: Beyoncé Swept The Awards, Nabbing Album Of The Year For Her Acclaimed ‘Lemonade’ Album
The R&B superstar also recieved Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best Collaboration (“Freedom”), Coca-Cola Viewer’s Choice Award, and tied with Bruno Mars for Video of the Year (“Sorry”).
