Ice Spice Says Matty Healy Apologized ‘a Bunch of Times’ for Questionable Podcast Remarks
Ice Spice said things are all good between her and Matty Healy after the 1975 frontman apologized for making racially charged remarks about the “Munch” rapper’s features during an appearance on “The Adam Friedland Show” podcast earlier this year.
In a new interview with Variety, the 23-year-old admitted she was left confused following the February incident, in which Healy laughed and participated in jokes mocking the rapper’s ethnicity. The rocker also appeared to endorse the co-hosts when they mimicked Chinese and Hawaiian accents.
“When I had heard that little podcast or whatever, I was so confused,” the star, who is Dominican and Nigerian, told the outlet. “Because I heard ‘chubby Chinese lady’ or some s—t like that, and I’m like, ‘Huh? What does that even mean?’ First of all, I’m thick. What do you mean Chinese? What?”
Healy reportedly made a few efforts to try and apologize, but to no avail. Ice Spice said the two eventually ran into each other at a recent Jean Paul Gaultier party, where they addressed the moment.
"He was like, ‘Hey, you okay?’ and I’m like, ‘Of course.’ He apologized to me a bunch of times. We’re good," she said.
Healy garnered backlash from fans who felt his comments were racist. The episode has been removed.
