Report: Pop Smoke Will Be Laid To Rest In Brooklyn
Amid the new reality that Brooklyn rap star Pop Smoke’s family has to contend with in the wake of his untimely death, new details surrounding the circumstances of his murder have surfaced.
The “Welcome to the Party” rapper was slain on February 19 after masked and armed intruders invaded the Hollywood Hill homes he was residing in around 4 a.m. The Canarsie-born rapper was rushed to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center at 5:12 a.m. in critical condition from multiple gunshot wounds where he succumbed to his injuries. Following an autopsy, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office concluded that he died from the gunshot wounds to his torso. Furthermore, his death was declared a homicide.
According to his death certificate, which was reportedly obtained by TMZ on Monday (Mar. 2), doctors performed a thoracotomy on the left side of Pop Smoke’s chest in an attempt to save his life. TMZ’s report hypothesized doctors opened up his chest in order to remove the bullets he was fatally struck by, although the outlet noted that the time between the shooting and his death was “rapid.”
Pop Smoke’s body has since been brought back to his native Brooklyn hometown where he will reportedly be laid to rest later this week, according to TMZ. Ahead of his burial, his family and close friends reportedly held a private memorial this past weekend.
Thus far, police are still searching for answers in regards to his death. Capt. Jonathan L. Tippet, the head of LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division, told the New York Times it still remains unclear as to whether Pop Smoke was the victim of a robbery gone wrong or if he was targeted by his assailants. Currently, the police have not announced whether they have identified any suspects or made arrests in connection to his death.
BET continues to send its prayers, love and light to the family and loved ones of Bashar Jackson during this time.
