Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday tribute was a star-studded celebration that was broadcast to an audience of 600 million people across 67 countries. The celebration held on June 11, 1988, brought awareness to the imprisonment of the anti-apartheid leader and former president of South Africa. 
Speakers and performers from all over the world gathered at Wembley Stadium in London for the event. This includes Whoopi Goldberg, who made a speech, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, who spoke and performed, Whitney Houston and others. 
This was the first of two events created as a tribute to Mandela; the second one was held on April 16, 1990, and broadcast to over 60 countries.
