Jada Pinkett Smith Says Chris Rock Asked Her Out Amid Will Smith Divorce Rumors

She dropped the revelation in her new memoir, “Worthy”, out October 17.

Jada Pinkett Smith is lifting the lid on a past secret admirer.

In anticipation of her upcoming memoir –Worthy– on shelves October 17, the movie star revealed that Chris Rock tried to date her back in the day. Jada revisited the moment when Rock asked her out during a recent interview with PEOPLE.

Rock's request for a date was followed by rumors that she and her husband, Will Smith, had divorced.

“I think every summer all the reports would come out that me and Will were getting a divorce. And this particular summer, Chris, he thought that we were getting a divorce. So he called me and basically he was like, ‘I'd love to take you out.’ And I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He was like, ‘Well, aren't you and Will getting a divorce?’ I was like, ‘No. Chris, those are just rumors.’ He was appalled. And he profusely apologized and that was that.”

This revelation comes more than a year after the infamous Oscars slap in 2022 when Will slapped Rock for making Jada the punch line of a joke while he hosted the award show. Although she has not talked to Rock since that moment, she does hope for a resolution.

“[Do I have] any desire to talk to Chris? Here's my desire: I just hope that all the misunderstanding around this can be cleared up and that there can be peace,” she told the outlet.

“I talk about this in the book, I think that there might be some misunderstanding between Chris and I as far as the 2016 Oscars. I think that he might've taken offense, which I meant no harm in offending. That wasn't my intention. But I do think that there's a big misunderstanding there,” she explained.

In 2016, Will was snubbed for an Oscar nomination for Concussion, while no Black talent was nominated that year by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. That led Jada to campaign #OscarsSoWhite, and a boycott of the show. Back In March, Rock admitted during his Netflix comedy stand-up that Jada tried to persuade him to quit the show in solidarity.

Looking back on that moment, she admitted to “not really recognizing the level of pressure [Chris] might've been under.”

“I probably should have called him and gone, ‘Hey, are you okay? And just know that although I'm speaking out about the Oscars, I do wish you the best and I just want you to know that,’ me taking the time to have called him and said that, just to touch base. But his feelings might've been hurt,” she noted.

During Rock’s opening monologue at the Oscars that year while hosting the show, he used Will and Jada as subjects of laughter, as reported by NBC.

“Jada said she’s not coming, protest. I was like, ‘Isn’t she on a TV show?’ Jada’s going to boycott the Oscars? Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited!” he said.

For Will, his award snub was steered for another punch line. “It’s not fair that Will was this good and didn’t get nominated. You’re right. It’s also not fair that Will was paid $20 million for ‘Wild Wild West,’ OK?” he said.
