Anita Baker Wanted by Police in Detroit

A bench warrant was issued after the singer missed a court date.

Anita Baker racked up a bill of at least $15,000 for a paint job for her house in Grosse Pointe, Mich., and now it may cost her a whole lot more.

An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday (March 19) for the Grammy-winning singer by the City of Detroit Police Department. (Grosse Pointe is a neighboring suburb.) The bench warrant cites failure to appear in court for a hearing about a dispute that she has with the painters.

Ray A. Smith Painting & Decorating sued Baker, claiming that she defaulted on her payments, totaling some $15,351.41, according to the Detroit Free Press. The company says that Baker received carpentry, plastering, and painting work on her home.

She was scheduled to show in court for a creditor's examination.

"I just want to collect the money," said Dan Gerow, attorney for the painters.

No official word as yet from Baker or her legal team, but this did come in on Thursday via her verified Twitter account: "WHATTT??!!... sittin' in the kitchen watching this on TV. BIG time crazy. Atty on his way to TV Station. Devil sho is busy."
