Mom's Controversial Facebook Post of Her Infant's Pierced Dimples Sparks Intense Debate on Circumcision

Enedina Vance wants people to think before altering their children's bodies.

A woman from Fostoria, Ohio, has caused much debate around the topic of child circumcision after posting a photo of her daughter with dimple piercings.

Enedina Vance posted the image of her daughter at the end of June with the caption, “I'm the parent, she is MY CHILD, I will do whatever I want! I make all of her decisions until she's 18, I made her, I own her!”

The post has been shared over 12,000 times.

  • Vance's first photo suggested there is nothing wrong with piercing her daughter's dimples

"So I got the baby girl's dimple pierced!!

It looks so cute, right?!! I just know she's gonna love it!! She'll thank me when she's older lol If she decides she doesn't like it, she can just take it out, no big deal

I'm the parent, she is MY CHILD, I will do whatever I want!! I make all of her decisions until she's 18, I made her, I own her!! I don't need anyone's permission, I think it's better, cuter, & I prefer her to have her dimple pierced. Its NOT abuse!! If it was, it would be illegal, but it's not. People pierce their babies everyday, this is no different

MY BABY, MY CHOICE!! PARENT'S CHOICE, PARENT'S RIGHTS!! Don't judge my parenting, we all raise our kids differently, it's none of your business anyway!!" Vance wrote.

  • Immediately after seeing the post, people were outraged with the photo

  • Eventually, Vance admitted the image was Photoshopped to prove a point about circumcision

"So it appears that yesterday the focus was on how insane it would be if a parent were to modify & alter their child by forcing them to undergo a facial piercing. People were outraged & rightfully so. Then the photo became the focus, was it real or was it photoshopped? Then, as the post was shared, people began to realize it was about children's right to physical integrity.

Altering a child's body simply for aesthetic reasons is wrong, as all the angry post, comments, & hate mail explained. 'You don't own your child!' 'Your baby isn't a doll you can customize!' 'How could you do that to your child?!!' 'Stabbing holes in your child is abuse & you don't deserve to be a parent!' Well said, I couldn't agree more, so why are ear piercings & genital cutting so popular?

Oh, that's not the same? Why?

So, today I'm being accused of 'parent shaming.'
Honestly, my post was meant to shock parents into seeing their children as human beings & to respect them as such. Every angry person who shared my post, did so in an attempt to shine light on an injustice. How my poor baby had suffered such a violation that she actually required being rescued. Yet, that anger, that outrage, that need for justice disappeared the moment they realized everything they had said, about what I 'did' to my baby, actually described what they had done to their own child. Of course, that didn't sit well with some," Vance wrote.
