Pelé’s 24-Hour Funeral Coronation
Legendary soccer player Pelé was laid to rest in his native Brazil with a 24-hour public wake which began on Monday at the Urbano Caldeira Stadium — home to his former club, Santos.
According to CNN, the funeral services began with a funeral procession carrying Pelé’s coffin through the streets of the city of Santos. The procession even carried the coffin down the street where the football legend’s mother, Celeste Arantes, lives.
As the hearse left Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo where the 82-year-old had died from multiple organ failure due to progression from colon cancer, fireworks erupted above the city.
According to the report, fans lined the streets of the route with flags and banners memorializing the three-time World Cup winner. One of the banners read, “Long live The King.”

Famous Brazilian players including Romário Ibarra and Neymar, were also in attendance during the historic progression, as well as Pelé’s son Edson Nascimento and his widow Marcia Aoki.
Pelé is widely considered one of the greatest soccer players of all time. He was also an internationally known representative and spokesman for the sport.
In 1977, he also recorded an album with Sérgio Mendes which served as the soundtrack to a documentary about his life. The album featured the song, “Meu Legado” (“my legacy”), sung by Pelé, which played on repeat inside the Santos Football Club stadium as his casket entered.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino told reporters, per Reuters, “Pelé is eternal. FIFA will certainly honor the ‘king’ as he deserves.”
Infantino added, “We have asked all football associations in the world to pay a minute of silence before every game and will also ask them, 211 countries, to name a stadium after Pelé. Future generations must know and remember who Pelé was.”
Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento in 1940, Pelé once said, “I was born to play football, just like Beethoven was born to write music and Michelangelo was born to paint.”
In the wake of his death, fans, sports stars and others have mourned the global icon. His native country held three days of national mourning.
